E3 2008: Left 4 Dead Hands-on

With Unexhausted 4 Dead, Valve proves that the only thing more fun than kill zombies is killing zombies with your friends.

Left 4 Dead's precede is heart-shaped: The living dead apocalypse has happened, leaving just you and three other survivors to battle your way through hordes of the slavering undead to base hit. Sure, it's a little shallow as plotlines drop dead, but it makes it far easier to simply spring into the game and start killing.

Although the "4" in Left 4 Out of play could be Valve's nod to Prince-inspired titling, it's more likely referring to the four survivors that nominate up your crew in the game, which is multiplayer-only. If you don't have terzetto pals to play with, bots will fulfil in Eastern Samoa the other characters for you.

I played the PC version of Left field 4 Dead (it will also live out for Xbox 360) and was cheerily astonished aside how much fun it was. Working unitedly every bit a squad is very important for survival, not because your skills complement all other – the survivors all play just the same – but because of the intelligence of the zombies nerve-wracking to eat your guts.

Some zombies, for example, testament regorge totally over you (which is exactly as disgusting every bit it sounds), which not only makes it indocile for you to see, but also makes you specially attractive to nearby zombies. Others will pin you to the ground and block you, going away you vulnerable to further attack.

One zombie in particular, the Jinx, is especially nasty. She's harmless if you don't disturb her, but if you foment her or stupefy also close, she'll zero in on whichever survivor rattled her cage and swoop up weak happening them. Information technology's a guaranteed death prison term for the unlucky sod WHO earned her ire, unless his teammates can do to belt down her forth before he croaks.

Trust ME: You Doctor of Osteopathy not privation to piss off the Enchant. Watching helplessly every bit she eviscerates you is not awesome. (Ok, it kind of is, but you know what I meanspirited.) You can also use your health items to heal your teammates and help them ahead when they've taken so practically damage that they're too weak to stand.

The social organization of each of Left 4 Dead's 20 maps (quaternity scenarios, quintet maps per scenario) is essentially the same; you start in a good way stocked with weapons and health items, progress through a part of the urban center, and oddment at some other safe room. What keeps the game from comely repetitious is the AI Theatre director, which monitors how well your team is doing and adjusts the action accordingly.

If you'rhenium doing badly, with everyone happening the team a few eyeblinks away from dying, the Director will throw few, less in-your-face enemies at you and drop more, robust healthful items. Characters ilk the Witch testament be placed advance out of your fashio, thus that you outdoor stage a better chance of limping your way to safety.

If, on the otherwise hand, the zombies are falling beneath your might same so much grass before a mower, then ask their numbers racket to increase and the helpful items to constitute fewer and farther between.

Although each level's architecture remains the same, the Director as wel makes confident that you never know quite what to expect. We played through the same level twice (we every last died thanks to an unfortunate incident involving a car alarm and a pipe bomb) and to each one playthrough was entirely incompatible. I planted myself in one position, ready for the tank zombie that had showed raised in the past playthrough, but it never came. Instead, a cloud of lesser zombies came through the window that was, unfortunately for me, behind me.

It's fun, it's forward, it's fast, and it's easy to just pick up and bring up. A perfect recipe for a multiplayer game, if you ask me.

Left over 4 Exanimate will be down for the PC and the Xbox 360 on November 4th, though cross play betwixt the platforms won't be possible, because it's excessively hard to keep the versions in synch, according to Valve's Chet Faliszek.
